Pillar 03 · Child Safeguarding, Equity & Inclusion

Every child has the right to be safe.

Child protection is not one activity among many — it is a priority that runs through everything SKOM does. We work with families, communities and local structures so that children are safe at home, at school, at the landing site and in every program.

Our commitment

Protection, equity and inclusion — for every child.

Island children can face particular risks: child labour in fishing, limited psychosocial support, and gaps in local safeguarding structures.

SKOM’s safeguarding pillar aims to ensure child protection protocols and safe physical spaces, promote inclusion for children of all backgrounds and abilities, and advocate for children’s rights and welfare — in line with Uganda’s Constitution (Article 34), the Children Act (Cap 59) and the National Child Policy 2020.

How we tell children’s stories

Because SKOM works with children, we aim to share images and stories with dignity and care:

  • Presenting children with dignity, hope and respect — never exploiting hardship
  • Avoiding unnecessary identifying information about children
  • Sharing children’s images and stories only with appropriate consent
  • Never publishing unverified claims about individual children
